Emotional Neglect in Relationships
Emotional neglect occurs when one partner does not fulfill the emotional needs of the other and their emotions are not heard and heeded. As opposed to obvious abuse, this type of neglect is subtle and is usually characterized by absence as opposed to negative behavior. The lack of trust and compassion may make both partners feel alone despite being in a relationship that is otherwise normal.
Identifying the signs
Emotional neglect appears in many subtle forms. You might find that there is a lack of frequent in-depth conversations, few displays of interest, or a feeling of not being listened to when you express your emotions. One of the partners is present physically but absent emotionally, and there is a lingering feeling of loneliness. These signs tend to begin gradually and then become more pronounced until both partners feel isolated.
Effect on interpersonal relationships
Intimacy and trust deteriorate over time when emotional needs are not met. Warmth and closeness might gradually be replaced by bitterness and loneliness. Neglectful partners may have poor self-esteem and begin to question their value or beauty.
